Eddie Bernice Johnson is serving her 14^th term as a Democratic congress woman in the 30^th district of Texas. She is serving as the first nurse elected to congress, she is also the first nurse elected to chair the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. She was the first African American to hold office in the Texas State House. She began her career as a LPN who made her way up to be the Chief Psychiatric Nurse for the V.A. in Dallas in 1972. She serves congress and has helped to write and pass 177 bills through the House and Senate and continues to advocate for nurses. She recently wrote the National Nurse Act of 2019 which plans to work along side of the Surgeon General and agencies of public health to address nursing concerns at local, state and national levels.
