Discussion: Literature Search, Part I

One of the more important questions you will need to ask and answer for yourself as you develop your research study is: “Which qualitative research approach best fits my research question?” You may be able to reframe your research question to fit more than one qualitative approach; generally, though, one of the available approaches is likely to fit better than the others once you have a well-defined question. The only way to make this determination is to develop a familiarity with different approaches.

In this Discussion, you will conduct a literature review of your topic area, focusing your choice on a research study that uses one of the qualitative approaches covered this week.

Make sure you get the complete citation of the article, as well as the .pdf, because your Instructor will want to review the article.

Be aware that your posting will first require an extensive article analysis. What you post is a summary of your work, not the entire analysis. This is good practice for summarizing and evaluating research for your capstone.

Write a 3-paragraph Discussion post in which you respond to the following:

Summarize the characteristics of the approach of the research article you chose during your literature search.

Summarize the research article, including the citation and sufficient information for your classmates and Instructor to locate the article.

Present a short critique of that article based on the “R8360 Guidelines for Reading and Evaluating Qualitative Research Articles” document.

Revisit your topic as a research problem which you began with and add to or refine your research problem and purpose statement process. Add other comments that summarize the development of your research ideas.

Assignment: Qualitative Research Approaches Matrix, Part I

In order for you to select the qualitative research approach that best fits your research question, you will need to develop a deeper familiarity with the approaches available to you. This week’s Assignment is the first of a two-part activity designed to broaden and deepen your base of knowledge of qualitative research approaches. While the activity does not encompass all possible approaches, it does allow you to explore the eight most common approaches you are likely to encounter and may wish to consider for yourself.

For this Assignment, you will complete the first half of the Qualitative Research Approaches Matrix Template, which is designed to allow you to compare and contrast qualitative research approaches.

To prepare for this Assignment:

Review this week’s readings, focusing on the differences among the following four types of qualitative research approaches:

Generic qualitative inquiry

Qualitative case study

Grounded theory and realism

Phenomenology and heuristic inquiry

Locate the Qualitative Research Approaches Matrix Template in this week’s Learning Resources.

Read the examples of research studies provided in this week’s Learning Resources.

Complete the Qualitative Research Approaches Matrix Template for the four approaches highlighted this week. Some of the cells have been pre-populated with sample entries or with prompts to help you focus your comparisons.

Journal: Qualitative Research Journal

In most weeks of the course, you will be asked to participate in an ongoing journaling activity, which is designed to allow you some insight into the process of collecting qualitative data via a journal.

Last week’s entry was in video format. For this week’s Journal entry, you will use text to consider and respond to three prompts.

In your response, be sure to address all three of the following prompts:

Progress: What have you discovered about the development of your research topic and research problem? Discuss the link from your prospectus to the research problem that you will be working on in this course. Alternately, describe how and why you’ve changed topics.

Problems: What obstacles or challenges do you see in evolving your research question? Is it a question of doing more research and reading? Do you need to get more familiar with qualitative studies in your topic area?

Plans: Look toward the next week. What are your next steps for evolving your research question and choosing the approach to use for your Final Project in this course?
