The fairy tales as well as the film Spirited Away draw our attention to the appetites of the flesh or carnal appetites and destructive consumption that goes beyond the appetites we tend to associate with the consumption of food. Select two scenes from Spirited Away in which the conflict between these different appetites is of particular significance and examine the scenes in detail. These questions may help you to focus your analysis:
- Which foods become symbolic in the scenes? What might they represent? With which characters are they associated?
- What do these two scenes add to our understanding about the way we conceive the process of growing up and the way we interact with one another as well as the world in which we live?
