CONTENT
Your guide should provide a comprehensive introduction to your selected work of art or architecture and explain its historical significance. Each work will be different, and will call for different types of content. At a minimum, though, you should be sure to include:
Basic visual and textual information about the work of art or architecture: what, where, when, who, how? A comprehensive introduction means you must give us a complete picture of what your work is, when and where it was made, how it was made, what it was made out of, who made and used it, what it’s subject matter is, etc. Use a variety of visual resources to capture and present all relevant aspects of the work: aerial views, general views, detail views, images of comparative works, reconstructions, drawings, plans, sections, diagrams, etc.
Historical background and context: what is the historical context of the work (where and when was it made?), and how does the work relate to the larger historical forces at that time (social, cultural, political, economic, etc.?)?
Historical significance of the work: why do we study this work today? For guidance on this, read the textbook entry on your work and see if you can figure out why the author decided to include it in his survey of Western Art. Often works of art and architecture are included in surveys because they illustrate basic concepts or trends in history, are characteristic of a particular culture or historical period, are the first example of their kind, influenced later art or architecture, or are simply extraordinary examples of human creativity.
Don’t hesitate to include your own thoughts about why the work is notable, especially interesting, or worth our attention. Your guide should excite our curiosity about the work, and one of the best ways to do that is for you to communicate what you find curious or fascinating about it.
CITING SOURCES
Your use of sources must be acknowledged and cited. Use MLA citation style to provide specific in-text citations as well as full bibliographical information in a separate list of works cited. For more information on this
