Compare and/or contrast the religious sensibilities (or lack thereof) of two of the readings from this term. From the Hellenic view of fate as presented in the Iliad and the Aeneid, to the more overtly religious texts we read from India and the medieval era – Augustine’s Confessions, the Qur’an and the Inferno – to the relatively irreligious or amoral readings from the end of the term, such as Thomas More’s Utopia or Shakespeare’s Hamlet, how do these works understand the order inherent in the universe and how does that understanding influence the characters, the plot, or the setting? How, for example, might you compare Homer’s view of fate with Virgil’s? Or how might you compare Dante’s view of the afterlife with that ascribed to Hamlet?
