Crisis interventions have more of a sense of urgency because the substance abuser is in immediate danger as a result of his or her abuse and potential addiction. Developing an effective strategy for crisis intervention that also considers the specific needs of an individual is an integral part of substance abuse counseling, and may contribute greatly to client success. For this Application, you will develop a crisis intervention strategy that takes into account the needs of someone in a selected population of your choice, and reflect on the ethical and legal considerations related to the intervention. Additionally, you will consider how prevention strategies might help address a substance abuse problem in a specific population in your community.

To prepare for this assignment:

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources, focusing on the information regarding overall intervention plan requirements and the criteria of specific treatment plans. Additionally, focus on substance abuse preventions strategies and addressing the specific needs of a community.
  • Choose a selected population (gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender, African American, Latino, Asian American, Native American, etc.) that you are familiar with or interested in.
  • Reflect on how a crisis intervention strategy might be applied to an individual from that particular population in a crisis situation.
  • Reflect on the prevention approaches, strategies, and programs discussed in the Learning Resources and think about how and why some approaches are more effective than others. Reflect on a substance abuse prevention strategy that you might use with that population, and how it might be applied.
  • Think about any legal and ethical issues that might arise in implementing the intervention.

  • Identify and briefly describe the selected population you chose.
  • Develop a crisis intervention strategy for an individual from that selected population.
  • Explain why you chose that particular strategy and how you might apply it to a crisis situation with the individual, providing specific examples.
  • Describe any ethical and legal considerations you might face in implementing the crisis intervention and how you would address them.
  • Describe a substance abuse prevention strategy you might implement with a specific population in your community.
  • Explain both why you selected the strategy and how the strategy might be effective with the population you selected.
