With the continuous genetic researches, there is the ability to alter genes of babies before they are born. Couples can opt to alter and select specific request such as deafness or if the baby will be a girl or a boy. One of the criticisms received is selecting a child to be deaf. Some parents who are deaf feel that their baby should be born deaf to be the same as them and they believe that it is a blessing. One specific case in our reading on selecting for disability states that once the couple decided they wanted their child to have the same disability in deafness, they used a donated sperm of a deaf friend to accomplish this goal. In my opinion, the child was never given a chance to choose and did they have the right to make such a decision for their own happiness. It wasn’t enough to just have a child whether deaf or not. Many believe that a child shouldn’t be limited by selecting a disability and it limits a child’s potential for a secure future. I do believe that a child born in a natural way without any alter with a disability can do as much or even more than a normal child. I call it being selfish but then who am I to judge when I’m not in this situation. I do stand by God creating people in his own image and that we shouldn’t alter his divine purpose. The Holy Bible states “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10, King James Version).
