I need help with my homework

BIO 1100 UNIT VI Discussion Board Question VZC

Some parents refuse to have their children vaccinated. What is the scientific evidence concerning the safety of vaccinations? You will need a reference. Should parents be forced to vaccinate their children in order to protect the rest of society against the reemergence of killers, such as measles, whooping cough, or polio?

My classmate wrote this and I have to comment on it this is what they wrote:

First and foremost, I apologize if my opinion offends anybody!

I cannot comprehend why as a parent, you would not allow your child to be vaccinated. Why would you not want to protect your child? “Today vaccines protect billions of people around the world from infectious diseases. In this fight we are much, much further ahead than most people realize” (ourworldindaata.com). With that said, I do not understand why you would not want to protect your child from things such as measles, whooping cough, or polio.

“Measles, a viral infection that is transmitted through the air, can result in a week of high fevers, sometimes serious complications like encephalitis and seizures, and death. Those who are not immunized are up to 35 times as likely to get measles” (nytimes.com)

As far as forcing parents to vaccinate their children, I am not 100% sure on that. Again, as a parent, I do not like the idea of being told what to do when it comes to my children. However, I do think that children that are not vaccinated should not be allowed to go to certain daycares and/or schools. With that said, it is mandatory that your child is vaccinated in order to go to my children’s daycare. However, it is not required that a child is vaccinated to play at the baseball park.
