Museum Report Assignment Sheet – Humanities 3

The museum report should be 2 pages (this means to the bottom of the second page not the top of the second page) in 12 point font with 1″ margins on all sides. You are to go to a museum and view art from the Baroque, Rococo, Eighteenth Century, Romantic, Impressionist and Post-Impressionist periods. Three Los Angeles area museums have permanent collections including art from these periods – Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA – http://www.lacma.org/), the Getty (http://www.getty.edu/visit/), and the Norton Simon in Pasadena (http://www.nortonsimon.org/). If you cannot go in person, you may complete the report by looking at art on their website.

When writing the summary of the museum exhibit, please choose one of the topics below:

  1. Compare three pieces of art from the Baroque and Rococo. Include the title, artist media, and any pertinent information provided by the museum regarding this artwork. In your comparison, you should include an analysis of the various time periods and how the art changed over time. Also note whether secular (non-religious) subjects are treated differently than religious subjects. Note artistic skill and compositional elements as well.
  2. Compare three pieces of art from the Neo-Classical, Romantic, and Realist periods. Include the title, artist, media, and any pertinent information provided by the museum regarding this artwork. In your comparison, you should include an analysis of the various time periods and how the art changed over time. Also note how mythological subjects are treated differently than real subjects. Note artistic skill and compositional elements as well.
  3. Compare four pieces of art from the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist periods. – Two from each period. Include the title, artist, media, and any pertinent information provided by the museum regarding this artwork. In your comparison, you should include an analysis of how Impressionist art differences from the Post-Impressionist art. You should compare the pairs of artworks (One Impressionist and One Post-Impressionist) that cover similar themes, for example, city-scene, pastoral scene, people, etc. Also note whether these subjects are treated differently from one another. Note artistic skill and compositional elements as well in the two pairs of comparisons.
