In my opinion, the white Oklahoman response to Greenwood revealed what was already known, that their white supremist attitudes toward the success of black communities were ones of jealousy, fear, hatred, and discrimination. The State Representative, Bill Graves, saying the past should be in the past is just as bad as the white supremist men who started the riots. The problem is that everyone needs to be taught about this. We need to learn our history to make sure it doesn’t repeat itself.
As for healing the community, I believe any living survivors should get some form of monetary reparations. And, the suggestion of descendants getting their college tuition paid sounds like a great idea to me as well. A monument is a great object to show remembrance of the people who lost their lives in the riots. But, the community also needs the politicians to acknowledge what happened and stop trying to keep it silent and say to put it in the past. Everyone needs to know this happened.
The people of Greenwood might respond to someone promoting “respectability politics” by informing them of the families, homes, businesses, livelihoods, prosperity, and so much more that was lost because of the stereotyping and negativity that they are promoting.
The arguments in support of “respectability politics” are everywhere. Some local governments here have made it a law that you cannot sag your pants. In St. Tammany Parish, next to Orleans, the local sheriff made a comment about young black men with dreads and “chee-wee hairstyles.” He said they are not wanted in his jurisdiction and they could expect to get a visit from a sheriff’s deputy.

Their attitude expressed pure evil, very unhappy about Greenwood being a thriving African American community. The whites did not like that the community was doing well. They wanted the world to stay in segregation, and that also meant the African American communities were not allowed to be successful and grow. In this they taught their children to hate also. I think the state should have to pay restitution to the survivors. I would think the people of Greenwood would be outraged that there is a thing as “respectability politics”. This is blame placer and an excuse for ones actions. You wouldn’t tell someone you wouldn’t starve if you didn’t get hungry, so why is it okay to say you wont be looked at bad if you sag your pants. Once case I recall was the Micheal Brown case. The 18 year old was shot by a police officer after what was said he held his hands up and shouted dont shoot. 12 rounds were shot at him the last shot being the fatal one. I have heard “respectability politics” that this wouldn’t have happened if he wasn’t in that neighborhood, or hanging out with the guy that was with him, or he should have stopped. The fact is the police officer shot multiple shots at an UNARMED man that was fleeing.
