In the history of Western art, new movements were often reactions to earlier ones. In the United States, Pop Art in the 1960’s seems to have been, in some ways, a reaction against Abstract Expressionism from the 1950’s.
Research the two movements and write a brief paper. Include:
- A very concise description of what the movements were about and what the work looked like.
- How was the relationship of the artist to the work different between the two movements?
- Choose a historically significant work from each of the movements. Compare them, and explain how they illustrate the differences in how the respective artists thought about their works.
