Short Response #1
How do Oedipus’ early actions and speeches, and also his interactions with other characters in the play, display some of the traits of a tragic hero as outlined in Aristotle’s Poetics?
So, this task requires you to discuss Oedipus’ character traits as a tragic hero as reflected in the pages of Oedipus Rex we cover ideally by the class prior to the due date of the response. You may also base your response up to page no. 17 of the Dover edition, the point where Tiresias, having been insulted by Oedipus, leaves the royal palace. Also, you will have to refer to some of the Aristotelian ideas of a tragic hero from Poetics.
Here are a few more tips:
- Follow MLA style for writing the response (Times New Roman 12, double-spaced etc.)
- If you use quotations, keep them short (and a handful only).
- Do not attempt to list a whole lot of traits; given the scope of the assignment, you should rather try to substantiate only a few points with examples/ ideas from the texts.
Write about 300 to 500 words.
