4. Janine is a 45-year old woman who requested treatment due to panic attacks and generalized anxiety. She has become more hesitant about leaving the house, and has started to panic in elevators, airplanes and public transportation as well. Her symptoms began about six months ago. Janine was very close to her mother, who was killed by a drunk driver approximately 1 year ago. Janine’s husband is angry and upset that their social life is nonexistent, and that she will not attend parties that he says are important to his career advancement. She also cannot host parties, because she feels that her husband’s work colleagues will look down on her for her appearance and her failure to “act like Martha Stewart” and this makes her too anxious to even try. Janine is a competent IT professional whose work mostly involves telecommuting from home. She has few friends, her closest friend is a work colleague who is busy with her husband and children. Describe a multipath explanation for Janine’s problems.

5. Peter has problems focusing his attention and is easily distracted. He often forgets important details, misses appointments and frustrates his friends and family with his inability to follow through. What questions would you want to ask to determine whether Peter’s symptoms are more strongly determined by biological, psychological or social factors?
