Student will write an essay on one work of art chosen from the text and relate it to a theme that is discussed in part 4 of the text, Gateways to Art.

Theme: Using Famous Art to Make a Social Difference

Essay will be 4 pages:

* 3 written pages (first page has student’s name, course, Instructor and date in upper left corner as in the example– last 2 pages are full pages)

* Works cited page – Text book should be cited with at least one other source outside of text.Internet sources may be used if they end in .edu or .org (no .com sources – not considered a “scholarly” source.

Paper should include:

An introduction which states the chosen artwork and where it can be found today.

A brief history of the artist or culture that produced artwork.

A discussion of the chosen artwork and how it fits into one of the themes discussed in part 4 of the text.Some other issues to consider:

What type of impact did the artwork make at the time it was created?

How did artwork reflect the philosophical, religious, or social climate of the time and place associated with the artist?

What is the perception of this artwork today?

Where is artwork located today?

What is the provenance of the artwork (history of ownership)?

What is your opinion of artwork and why did you choose it? (Remember in MLA format there is not the use of first person (I, you, we).Do not write questions, state facts and your ideas.Write your opinion as third person and make statements.

Example: Roman art is not mystical, but solid and easy to understand.The writer admires their engineering abilities, but is not emotionally moved by their art.
