1. How did slavery change in the first half of the 1800s? Consider the kinds of labor that slaves were forced to do, the economic impact of slavery, who owned slaves, where slaves lived, etc. What impact did these changes have on the nation as a whole?

2. Explain the circumstances surrounding the Compromise of 1850. Why did it come about? How successfully did it solve the problems that led to its creation? How did people from the North and the South view the compromise? Which parts of the compromise did different regions like or dislike and why?

3. Explain the circumstances surrounding the passage of the Treaty of New Echota. What was the purpose of the treaty? What kinds of people signed it and supported it (include both Cherokee and US positions)? Who benefited most from the terms of the treaty? Finally, if you were a member of Congress tasked with approving or not approving the Treaty of New Echota, what position would you take? Why?

Your essay should contain an argument, which is evidenced through an introduction, thesis statement, and conclusion. Furthermore, your essay must demonstrate a broad range of knowledge from the entire course, so make sure to draw from materials from the entire semester.

Be sure to address slavery in the colonial period as well as in the USA. How and why did the institution of slavery change? What role did slavery play in the economic growth of the USA? What events occurred that made slavery a more divisive issue in the 1840s-60s?


2. The westward movement was one of the strongest forces at work in American history from the founding of the British colonies in the early seventeenth century to the outbreak of the Civil War. Write an essay showing how westward expansion affected the development of the United States. In your response, be sure to consider the following: 1. the factors that sparked the westward advance; 2. new lands that were acquired from foreign powers, including Indian nations; and 3. how events in the West affected the rest of the nation in important ways.


3. Trace the growth and importance of sectionalism in American history from European conquest to the Civil War. How did the North and South differ? Be sure to consider the differences from the founding of English colonies through the middle of the 1800s. Describe their characteristics and account for the differences among them. How did these disagreements affect the nation, especially during the l840s and l850s? Finally, address what you see as the major causes of the Civil War.
